I feel the same. I don't want to leave my passport w/ them. so I'm thinking to report my marriage and get new passport under my new name when my old one is about to expire..I still have 4yrs in it as well anyways.......do u think that's possible?

I have no idea. I guess I'll have to call the Chicago Consulate to get answers to my questions :)

I just called them. They said I can do both at the same time and I can just wait for it. This is their last day and they will open again on January 3rd. :) The guy asked me if this is the first marriage for both of us and when I said yes, he said no problem. I guess being divorced or annulled makes it more complicated before of additional requirements.

They are going to give you your amended passport on the same day that you report your marriage???

Are you sure that's what they said???

Please keep us posted.

They can also apply to renew a passport(personal appearance required), but that would be mailed to the addresses many weeks later.

Are you saying that an amended passport would be returned the same day that they applied for it?

Isn't the amendment just an attachment to the original passport?

Found this:

Important Note: Amendment of passport details applies only to the green passport as there is no amendment page in the machine-readable passport. For changes to MRP details, kindly refer to the section on Passport Application.

I will post my experience here after I my passport is amended. If it's successful.

I'm guessing they will attach something like one of the many stickers the PI gov't put in my passport before I left. Or maybe a stamp? I don't know. But yeah, that's what the man said when I asked if I can wait for it, he said yes.

Which passport do you have? The green one, or the new brown one? The brown one can't be amended, it has to be reissued. He may be selling you an Affidavit of One and the Same Person, which is just a piece of paper with a seal and a ribbon on it.

I had my brown passport amended just fine. Its just a stamp on the passport with your new name and an official seal.

My Journey:

We met through a study-abroad program in Shanghai, China in August of 2009

We got engaged March of 2010

I received my K1 VISA in 6 months (June-December 2010)

We were married 04/02/2011
I received my conditional 2-year greencard (AOS) in 2.5 months with no interview (April-June 2011)

Our son was born 02/03/2013

I received my masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology 04/17/2013

I received my 10-year greencard (ROC) in 3 months with no interview (March-June 2013)

My husband returned from deployment 06/20/2013

My naturalization journey took 4 months (April-August 2014)

I became a US citizen on 08/01/2014

Received passport in 3 weeks (regular processing)

Thank you, VJ! smile.png

I wonder why these websites say they can't do it.

I don't know. The inconsistency doesn't surprise me though  At least for the benefit of those under the NY consulate, they will do it. :)
