Yes, they represented 35 of the 185 men there. Which in no way belittles what they did and no one ever claims otherwise. The shrine at the Alamo in fact displays a flag for the home state/country of each man that died and there are a whole bunch of flags!

There is a county in Texas named for each man that died there regardless of where he was "from" he died a Texican.

This being one of several events that lead to Tennessee being called the "Volunteer State". I believe that we are still rpresented in the arme forces in numbers out of proportion to our population.

Could be, however if you check the stats you wilt see that Vermont has had the highest per capita representation in the military since WW2 and the highest percentage of wounded/killed per capita of any state. I was suprised to learn that but given we are a state of 600,000 total population a few people make a big impact on the "per captia" numbers.

But yes, that is why Tennessee is called the volunteer state

Gary,

Quite a few states do well in the per capita numbers. It was originally applied after the War of 1812 and the Mexican war, but I think stuck just as much for consistently high percentages over various conflicts, even through the present. I think it probably applied even during 'the War of Northern Aggression' 8^) on the Union side of the scale as well. A truly significant number of Tennesseans fought for the North. I think a number of states could good make a claim to the 'title', Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Texas and Pennsylvania all seem to have been prominent in my recollection. I am also sure there are a number of others.

Moscow (and Russia in general) has come a long way.

I'm still kind of shocked when I see crowds of protesters not being run over by tanks. Da, democracy!

It's better than before, but it's still a far cry from democracy. Policy from the Kremlin now is more about containing the protests than stiffling them entirely. It's like lighting a firecracker on your palm versus inside a closed fist. It won't feel good and might even leave a burn, but it sure beats blowing your hand apart. Russians are a passionate people, and best to allow them to let off steam regularly and harmlessly. That said, I doubt the Kremlin will agree to a truly fair election. It's a pity, since Putin and EP (United Russia) would still get the majority of votes in the end. But a majority isn't enough for V.V.; his enormous ego demands a proportionally large and unequivocal mandate.

Our timeline:

01/11/12 - Submitted I-130s to Moscow USCIS in person

01/12/12 - Had interview with Moscow USCIS officer to establish bonafide marriage

01/12/12 - I-130s approved and passed to US Consulate

01/13/12 - IV Unit in Moscow received approved petition

01/23/12 - We received confirmation that I-130s were approved by USCIS

01/24/12 - We received package notification from post office

01/26/12 - Picked up "package" - notifications from IV Unit with case numbers

01/26/12 - Set interview date online

02/01/12 - Passed medical exams

02/02/12 - Received police record

02/09/12 - Interview... APPROVED!

02/13/12 - Visa delivered

02/23/12 - POE Chicago

So it's just like America then.

Yes and no.

To say our elections are fair is kind of untrue. Yes, we're free to vote for the candidate of our choice. But, becoming a candidate is pretty restricted.
