My wife is starting to get a little homesick. I only know a couple of Filipinas in our area(we are meeting them New Years Eve). I was hoping to be able to find some Filipinas my wife could correspond with. I think it would really make her feel better. We were married 12-14-11. I know not having her family with her for the wedding bothered her and I am not sure what else I can do to make her feel better. I think having other Filipinas to talk with or email would definitely help. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Todd

I'd suggest stopping by one or more of these places. I hear that Pinays that have been in the US for some time can look down on the ones who are "fresh off the boat" but maybe you'll find some friendly ones. You'll also need to become acquainted with the process of sending a balikbayan box, and some or all of these locations should ship them. She may perk up if she can send some things back home to her family.

Does her family back home have home computer or access to one? Maybe it would help her to be able to video chat with them. May be worth it to get a computer for them in the Phils so she can do this. Also search around online for local Filipino organizations and events. There are bound to be some in your area. I see you are in or around the Columbus area. I live near Cleveland and there are many, MANY Filipino communities here. This I learned when I brought my first Filipina wife here some 15 years ago. Back then I had a home pc and internet access but my ex-wife's family did not have access to one and anyway video chatting and web cam technology was not anywhere near what it is today. But the thing that helped my first Filipina wife was going to the Asian grocery stores and the local Catholic church and just basically going everywhere with me and we always ran into other Pinays and they aways exchanged phone numbers (no cell phones then either) and soon we would be visiting them or them us. And also meeting Filipinos from the local Filipino communities is how we got invited to so many Filipino parties and cultural events. It's funny cuz before my first Filipina wife came here I was not even aware there was a Filipino community right here in the suburb I live in and I had lived here for about 15 years then. But just going out and doing routine things with my new wife like grocery shoppping and stuff like that they seemed to come out of nowhere, but they had actually been there all the time.

Now my current fiancee and I are waaiting her VISA delivery and I am working on getting a home computer for her family there so when she gets here she can web chat with them anytime she wants. In our reltionship she always went to internet shop to web chat with me everyday, but that would be more of a hardship for her mother and grandmother who are not pc savvy anyway. So having one at their home will be better cuz my fiancee's brother and wife can teach them the basics to get online and chat and then they can do it anytime they want. I know this will be extremely important to my fiancee's adjustment here. And also from my previous marriage to a Pinay I still have many Filipino friends I made during that marriage and those friends are all eagerly awaiting my fiancee's arrival and I know that will hellp her a great deal also.

God bless to you both and wishing your wife gets through her adjustment quickly!

Thanks for the suggestions. Yes her sister has internet so she keeps in touch with her and the family through her sister. We went to the grocery store in Dublin but it is now out of business :( I did find another filipino grocery/restuarant on the East side of Columbus. If anyone would like that information let me know!

Hello Todd,

The Filipino population is Ohio is massive. We're just north of Dayton. My asawa has been in US for nearly 5 years now (CR-1) and has assimilated very well. There's a huge group in the Dayton area - Philippine Americam Society of Greater Dayton - probaly mostly due to Wright Patterson Air Force Base in NE Dayton. There are two Fil-Am groups in Columbus, one in Cleveland. You'll have no trouble finding Filipino food at several markets in the vicinity. La Herba Buena (formerly Dublin area) is now closed, but will reportedly be re-opening soon in Hilliard. You'll also enjoy the giant Asian Festival in Columbus every Memorial day weekend. Good luck!!

It's normal to have your wife get homesick since the Filipino culture is based purely on family. I bet she misses them so much. Unfortunately I'm not in Ohio so I can't help much.

Does she communicate with her family in the Philippines? If not I encourage you to buy a webcam so they can Skype. If their family doesn't have internet or a computer, I would encourage you to invest because family is very important to the Filipino.

Good luck and I'm sure she will start feeling fine soon with a caring husband like yourself.

Justin

Hello friends in the great state of OH-IO! This is Mike from Dayton, and currently going thru the K-1 process with my Cebuano Fiancée Gina. I am traveling back to Cebu in October, and then hopefully returning back to Ohio with Gina and her Visa in April of next year 2014. I am guessing that Gina will get abit lonely and homesick here in this new country and experience for her. I'm sure she would welcome the opportunity to have other Filipina friends here in Ohio. Feel free to contact us, and Gina is also on Facebook, and on this website - her member name being "Gina&Mike" Good luck to everyone, and God bless us all!

Hello,

Just found your post today. I am just west of Columbus. And just 30 minutes ago finally sent in our I-129F packet (front loaded to the max). Seems like it took forever gathering up all the info and docs needed. So I guess our official wait time starts now. Would be great to meet some new people when my lady gets here. I know it is probably a year out, but still. She lives in Japan on long term visa and I am going there to spend a couple weeks with her in August. Hopefully this will be last time I have to make that trip to see her. Was last there in December and we went to Phils to spend holiday with her Family. She is originally from Davao City. Hope you and yours are doing well.

There are lots of Filipino's in Columbus and central Ohio. You just have to get out there and mingle, lol. There are two FB groups - PASCO and TOPAS. They usually have events monthly or sometimes weekly. You can meet many Filipinos there. We also have a Bible study group and other friends we hang out with. My wife is from Dumaguete. Feel free to contact us! God bless
