Today when my USC wife and me went to Bureau of Immigration, Chennai to extend the length of her visa stay in India, they asked that I should have her name on my Indian passport. I am currently in Chennai for last 2 yrs, and havent updated her name, plus my passport was from other state, so I was not sure about all this process. In fact, they already have extended her visa stay last 2 times without this hassle, but this time, they said, that is something new law!!!

The reason why I havent put the effort to add her name, because she needs to change her name in passport with my last name. She has been in India since we are married, so it didnt look possible to change her last name in passport while she is in India, as she would need to submit old passport, and get the new passport. While she is in India, we had no heart to take risk to send her passport thru Fedex in USA while she is in India. We both planned that once she and I get in USA, then we will process for this name changing stuff.

Now to extend her stay in India, Bureau of Immigration, Chennai really wants me to add her name in passport otherwise they wont issue the extension.

All right, I said, fine, will do it. But my question is that,

Do I have put her passport name ( first & last name ) in my new replaced passport? Or do I have to update her last name in my passport with my last name?

Since our CR-1 case is with NVC, and we just have used her passport name in all forms to avoid any name conflict issue.

Please advice me for the same.

Thank you and appreciate your time!

in our case, we didnt change her name. just added her maiden name in my passport.

All right! Since we have used her passport name in all doc for CR-1 Process, so will stay with the same to add her name in my passport.

Down the road, once everything is settle down then will update the name. :-)

Thank you! :)
