My wife and I would like to have her parents visit in or around January and according to the state department website " Entry and the length of authorized stay within the U.S. are determined by the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Officer at the port-of-entry each time you travel. " Ok easy enough to understand, but what is an average length of stay for anyone that has had family visit. We were kind of hoping they would be able to stay for three months. I would appreciate anyones input into this, thanks.

The I-94 is always valid for 6 months for tourist visas and normally the POE immigration officers maximize that and give 6 months. Before the 6th month if you want them to stay longer, you can request for an extension up until a year.
