Hi everyone,

I am a 29 year old Australian female whose 37 year old boyfriend lives in New York City. I returned from my first stay there almost 3 weeks ago now. We are unofficially engaged (can't afford the ring yet).

We have read a lot of information on this site, as recommended by a friend who has had a similar journey. I understand that my partner needs to be able to prove that he can support me when I first move there? What documents does he need to provide? Also, does he have to be in permanent full time work for a certain amount of time? Unfortunately while I was over there, he lost his job he'd had for about 4 years. He was the third to go at his job, and I got to see firsthand how difficult it is to get work there as well as unemployment benefits. We have it so much easier here in Australia! He also wasn't earning much at all. I was informed that he must earn approx. $20,000 minimum a year to qualify, but can get someone to co-sign? Currently he isn't working :( He also moved back to his mother's apartment a few days before I left, as he couldn't afford to pay rent on his own. I feel that this situation may affect our chances of me being allowed to live there. I am confident in finding work over there but heard that I have to wait 6 months or something until I can get a work visa?

I am grateful for any information :) I am so stressed and missing him like crazy. I just don't know where to start with all this visa stuff. Also, I don't know whether he would be better off moving here?? We both just want to be together and aren't that fussed as to where we live. Although, as both my parents have passed away, its the better option to live in New York as he has a lot of family there.

Thanks :)

Hi there , you can get a co sponsor to sponsor you , like his mum ? if she agrees to it and earns enough money .

im in the same situation applying for k1 visa my lover only earns 15,000 a year not much and does have much savings

im the saver :) but lost his job at the end before the noa2 got approved 3 months into th process .. now has a nother job

if he has about 60 grand in savings he wont need to have another job , but who has that kind of money?

You can get married and it should only take 3-6 months to get a work perit you wouldnt need a work visa if your married ..

if you wanted to just go over there on a working visa they are very hard to get , takes time and u can only stay there for a year usually .

its complicated i know but you want to do it the right way first and you wont have to leave eachother ever again . I know it will be harder for us aussies to move to U.s we are prevliged enough to have a goverement like we do but as long as your with your loved one you can get through the battles it will be over there.

So i suggest talking to him about who could sponsor you over there
