Immigration Subcommittee Holds Hearing on Legislation to Stop Obama’s Administrative Amnesty

July 26, 2011

This afternoon, the House Immigration Subcommittee on Immigration Policy and Enforcement held a hearing on the “Hinder the Administration’s Legalization Temptation Act” or the HALT Act (H.R. 2497), introduced by Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX), Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.

The hearing focused on the many ways in which the Obama Administration has used its “prosecutorial discretion”—the ability of the executive branch to decline to enforce immigration law against individuals on a case-by-case basis—to usurp Congress’ authority to enact immigration policy. In particular, the hearing focused on a string of policy memos issued by ICE Director, John Morton. Rather than granting relief to select aliens on a case-by-case basis, these memos set blanket policies telling ICE officers whom they should and shouldn’t enforce the law against.

In his opening statement, Rep. Lamar Smith focused on Obama’s latest abuse of prosecutorial discretion—a June 17, 2011 memo issued by Morton authorizing ICE personnel to decline to enforce immigration laws against those who meet qualifications for amnesty under the failed DREAM Act. “What had once been rumor fueled by leaked administration memos is now official Department of Homeland Security (DHS) policy as of last month,” said Rep. Smith. “DHS’s plan to open the door to mass administrative amnesty is a rejection of Congress’ constitutional rights and shows utter disdain towards the wishes of the American people,” he further asserted. Despite Congress’ repeated rejection of the DREAM Act amnesty legislation over the last decade, the Obama Administration insists on granting an administrative amnesty to this subset of the illegal alien population using its prosecutorial discretion.

The HALT Act sends the needed message that not only is Congress tired of the Administration’s continued attempts to bypass its authority over immigration law, but that the American people have also grown tired of Obama’s abuse of power. If enacted, the HALT Act would prevent the Administration from further abusing its prosecutorial discretion to grant administrative amnesty to certain classes of illegal aliens by suspending its ability to:

• Grant deferred action to illegal aliens;

• Grant parole or extended voluntary departure to illegal aliens who do not meet narrowly defined criteria;

• Cancel the removal and adjust the status of illegal aliens ordered deported; and

• Grant work authorization to illegal aliens.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

More grandstanding and yet another roadblock for the GOP on their path to la Casa Blanca.

Unfotunately for Obama and his cadre of illegal alien cheerleaders it is still The White House...not La Casa Blanca.

I love it...nearly 10% unemployment under his watch and his administration is granting work authorizations to illegal aliens. Instead of running for reelection in 2012 this assclown should be tried for treason against the American people and impeached. La Casa Blanca my azz! Grandstanding my azz! Obama yo' mama! Another Obama-rama trauma!

Don't worry about the unemployment rate. Boehner and his crew promised they will focus on jobs, jobs and jobs when given the opportunity to govern. They're pumping jobs bill after after jobs bill through the House. There are more jobs bills now than there are un- or underemployed Americans. Or is that some alternate universe of what could have been if they would actually deliver on their professed #1 priority? In actuality, they haven't introduced, let alone passed a single piece of legislation geared towards promoting the creation of a single job. In fact, they've done the exact opposite. But I'm glad to see that the la Casa Blanca hit just the nerve it was targeting.

You know, the really funny thing is that I am really interested in seeing a stop put to illegal immigration. I just want it done in a way that works - put the enablers and profiteers out of business - rather than building a wall for which anyone will be able to find a ladder that overcomes it.

So why is Obama pushing so hard to help illegals ?

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Latino and lefty votes. That's why. He's a politician. Does tat surprise you?

It never surprised or fooled me. I know a phony when I see one. However, some were taken in by the "Hope and Change"...I'm not like the other politicians and "my administration will be different" bullshit.

Which candidate for President isn't making that claim when running for office? They all are. I have yet to see a candidate that makes a line like - I'm gonna keep things as they are, run the government BAU - part of their standard campaign stump speech. I don't understand why some pretend that Obama making this claim was somehow something unique in his campaign. It isn't. It's standard campaign protocol for any candidate for that office.

So they all lie and Obama is just doing what they all do? Lie and deceive their way in and then ram their agenda through by hook or crook?

Gee...it makes me so proud to live under such a wonderful political system. :blink:

Don't tell me that this reality just now presented itself to you.

So give us a reason why we need to give this clown 4 more years to lie and deceive us some more?

Fool me once...shame on you. Fool me twice...shame on me.

But I know what you are already going to say...Obama sucks, but the opposition is worst?

Not a very optimistic view of government in general. No wonder many Americans prefer smaller government. Why compound the lies and deception? Less is better.

We're going to get lied to one way or the other. What difference does it make? Let the GOP nominate someone electable and we may just have a new clown to deal with. Not that it would make much of a difference from that perspective but from a policy and priority point of view, I prefer this clown over the clowns the other side sends into the race.
