Has anyone traveled recently to Montego Bay airport with their small child? I'm in the process of getting a passport for my two year old son and traveling to Jamaica August 16th-31st... I've read that some countries require birth certificates and signed copies of consent from BOTH biologicial parents in order to enter or exit the country. Is this true for Jamaica and re entry to the U.S.?

In other words, do I need ANYthing other than my son's passport for entry and exit from Jamaica and enter the U.S.? His biological father is on the birth certificate but will not be traveling with.

Any information is greatly appreciated!!

Good Morning Eagle Eye :star:

I have been going to JA with my US citizen child for many years.

Every time I have gotten a permission slip to travel notarized by his father.

Jamaica will have no problem letting the child in with only their passport, but the airline can request to see the permission slip from the child's other parent.

In 5 trips with my son, only once have I been asked for this letter, but I would hate to need it and NOT have it.

Here is the format to use:

That's what I'm afraid of, consent is not happening in my case. I have yet to receive my son's passport and I applied two months ago. I have full custody by the state being single/unwed at time of my son's birth. However, child's father is on the birth certificate, so then we get the issues by federal govn not recognizing state law, etc etc etc... I wonder if there's a way to call ahead on the airline to ask what their policy is for a minor child/and if they stick strictly to the policy, no other questions asked?

Flying AirTran btw... August 16th!

I have been speaking with the courts on this issue, here in Florida and if you awarded custody, you are only required to have your passport. As long as the child is traveling with one parent, that is all that matters. If he is not traveling with a parent then the notarized letter is required

This was of great interest to me since my child is traveling with me and her father has never been involved.

However, if by law (court order) the parents did not establish custody, then along with the child's passport, the letter of consent from the other parent is highly recommended to have to present in case they ask as not having would be considered kidnapping.

For my 2 sons, we had to go to country, far far in Jamaica to get consent (with signed letter in front of the JP).

That might be the law in Florida - but that law isn't going to apply in a different country - You have to follow whatever laws the country sets out - So it's better to err on the side of caution and have the letter or proof of the court awarded custody with you, in case you are questioned.
