I am still trying to understand something.... and it makes no sense...

In a lot of Philippine photos... and I a LOT. including my own fiancee and her friends...

Everyone seems to be holding their fingers in a V, or an L near their face.

I am told it is for a sign of beauty.

Any other answers???

It's a gesture that they a posing for a photo. I think it's called, jarping. Ask your fiancee. I just watched a documentary on a bar girl in Thailand and she does the same gesture when smiling for the camera.

The one-finger sign already means something, so they have no choice but to use two fingers to signal what they want, depending on the context.

The 'V' thing is all over Asia and it's ubiquitous. I've read about a dozen different explanations of how it originated...one says it came from Japan in the 1970s and had something to do with a figure skater there during the olympics, then it spread all over Asia. It's very hard to find a picture of a group of Filipinos, Japanese, Taiwanese, Koreans, etc that don't automatically do that when a camera comes out.

I asked my wife about it and got an honest, straightforward answer...she has no idea, they've always done that.

Same with the index and thumb gesture, but I've only seen in the Philippines and I think it may be local to the Visayas and Mindano...but I'm not sure. It seems to be a non-verbal version of 'cheese!'.

My wife is Visayan and I did see a lot of the index and thumb gesture under the chin. The gesture was used in pictures and used with the words cute mo talaga. I'll ask her when she's home if it's a local thing?

The one gesture that I find comical is how Filipinos point with their lips, and not their hands. The further something is the further the lips stretches out. My wife does this all the time, and now I find myself doing it now and then.

the pointing of the lips... I notice a lot of it and try to just let it go... But it really seems to be a Filipina thing.....

i would say that the L thing like what the funny picture shows is "emphasizing to look at the face=how good lookin he/she is". something like that...or maybe "hey, I look good"..but we all do that just for fun.
