So I had my interview on June 6th and everything went well except for I was missing one piece of paperwork which was proof of citizenship for our joint sponsor (my father in law). The guy at the window said everything was fine and I just needed to send this and my passport and it would take a couple of weeks after that.

Today I checked the DX tracking and it said that the embassy had received the documents today. I telephoned the embassy to check everything was okay and the guy said that he didn't know and tht because it was a blue form it sounded like I was in AP! He said it sounded like I had been refused until these documents were received and it could take around 90 days.

The blue form did not have the box checked that said I had been refused, just the box requesting the documentation.

Now I have no idea if I am looking at 2 weeks or 90 days, my wife is due to give birth to our son on August 7th and I can't get answers from anyone at the embassy.

The telephone helpline is less than useful, just couldn't get any answers, I assume when they ask for case number etc it is so they can look on their system, but he couldn't tell me anything.

Andy, it just got there today. The guy told you it would be a couple of weeks. So start your couple of weeks counting from today. The couple of weeks is not about making up their mind, it's because they are very busy and it may not get to somebody's attention for a "couple of weeks". When they get to it, they will send the visa. In the meantime, there's not anybody that can tell you everything is okay. You know it got there and so everything is ok. Right now it may still be in the mailroom.

I understamd that part, but the guy on the phone said it could be 90 days. The guy at the interview said it would take a couple of weeks, not somebody would look at it in a couple of weeks. They don't really need to make their mind up about anything, i was told it was approved but for the birth certificate. I don't expect it to be done right away, but 90 days to check a birth certificate?

Just don't want to miss the birth of my son.

The people that answer the phone know nothing. They see very little about your case and read a script. It's not going to take that long to check the birth certificate. It took you 3 weeks to get it to them, now give them a couple of weeks to get it back to you.

Did you include a letter with the BC asking that they expedite it back to you because of the impending birth? As soon as they open the package, they'll hopefully put it on the top of the stack. I understand your frustration but you would have had the visa by the 10th if you hadn't messed up. Then it was 3 weeks more for you to respond. You can't get too upset with the embassy people when the current delay is your fault.

Your wife can call DOS and find out when the visa is printed. I wouldn't waste anymore money calling the embassy to ask the status.

Thank you for the reply and I totally agree that I probably am freaking out a little too soon, and i'm sure it's not going to take that long to check a birth certificate but you have made a bit of a wild assumption that we messed up.

When my wife sent the I-864 and her father the I-864A, she phoned the NVC shortly afterwards to check that they had everything they required and they said they required her birth certificate only and this was to prove the relationship between her and her father. She then sent this to them and phoned again. She was told everything was fine, present and correct. At no point did they tell her that her father's birth certificate was also required.

It was only at the interview that I was asked for this and clearly I did not have it because I did not know this was required.

We asked her father to send this to me as quickly as possible but I did not receive it until last wednesday, despite the post mark on the envelope stating June 9th. It took nearly 2 weeks to reach us.

The blame for the delay should fall equally on the NVC and the US/UK postal service.

As i'm sure you know, you jump through hoops to be with the one you love and it's just annoying when you miss one because you were misdirected.

It does say on the I-864 that you need to prove the co-sponsors US Citizenship, which for us was a photocopy of her mum's passport. I had my lady express mail me the I-864's and evidence because I was freaking out too - it was a week in the end.

If the person you spoke to at the "embassy" was Scottish, then I'm afraid you were talking to the call centre in Glasgow, and not someone at the embassy.

I have chilled a little now, i'm sure it won't be long. It is frustrating that it is virtually impossible to get answers about your specific case. Especially at £1.23 a minute. The NVC were able to give us specifics about our case but once it's out of their hands it's nearly impossible. I know this is nothing new but it is new to me.
