What does the USCIS case number mean?

Hi everyone,

My husband and I got bored today and started searching random case numbers using the USCIS case status information page. Anyway, that activity led us to wondering how the case number is assigned and what it means exactly.

After doing a quick google search, we found out that it used to be that the first three letters was the service center, followed by two digits for the fiscal year and then three digits representing the day of the fiscal calendar (starting October 1st) and finally the case number. So EAC0900550001 would be the first case number assigned at VSC on the 5th of October 2009 for example.

However, our case number is EAC11901XXXXX. Obviously there is no 901th day of the year. So, does anyone have any ideas what it could mean? I searched the forums and couldn't find a similar question. Just curious.

Not sure if this is the best place for this thread, if not, someone feel free to move it to a more appropriate place. Thanks! :)
