I am filing for my wife at the Bogota Embassy. The packet we just downloaded says we need to fax or email the completed Part I of the DS230 to the Embassy in Bogota. As well as the signed letter of "readiness" DS2100 to them as soon as they have our packet forwarded from the NVC. Along with that is the list of all the documents that are required. And they are of course the same original documents that the NVC is requesting...the marriage cert, police report, DAS, etc. And we are supposed to have those in hand when we go to the Embassy for the interview.

My question is: are we supposed to just take copies of all this in case they lose something in the NVC? Because everything should be forwarded to the Embassy to the NVC right? So maybe just send a copy of the completed DS230 and the DS2100 and send the original DS230 to NVC?

Or do we need to send the originals to NVC but have certified copies of all these things in hand as well when we go for the interview?

Offically, you send originals PLUS a copy to the NVC who will forward everything to the consulate, and the originals will be returned to you after the interview. However, having another set of originals/certified copies will make you feel better and in the rare case that something is lost in transit, you can quickly respond. And a lot depends on the consulate whether they will make you get new certified copies or originals from the issuing agency or whether they will accept your copies--we have two original/certified copies of everything just in case--so far everything has been flawless, but why take a chance.
