I am completely confused as to why VFS is used. I understand it is to make sure the documents are in order for the Interview. But...

Aren't most of the original documents submitted to NVC and forwarded to Embassy/Consulate? Mumbai/Bombay is the one I am specifically talking about here.

Is it possible to go to the VFS office pay the fees and not submit anything? I don't understand whats the point of having two originals for everything submitted for the interview.

I do understand taking copies to the interview, but not submitting two different originals.

Any clarity of VFS is appreciated.

Oh, this is regarding IR-1/CR-1 paperwork...

VFS is essentially a courier service. Their job is to delivery (missing) items in a file to the Embassy and also to deliver passports back to the applicants.

I do understand however, the VFS seems silly but its essentially a way for the Embassy's to outsource a portion of their operations. All nations seem to use VFS, there was a VFS office for the USA but also for many other countries .

Anyhow, when we went to the VFS (for CR-1) visa, all we did was pay the courier fee and show the interview letter. We did not submit anything to them in addition, only the bare minimum.

If you want to do that, it should be perfectly fine as you have evidence with you.

For CR1 you do not have to submit anything to VFS if you don’t want to, all you need is pay the fees.

I think I submitted the things which I was going to take with me to consulate anyways so that I did not have to carry them on the day of interview. (I was being bit lazy….lol)

Only thing I can tell is when you submit it before hand like your medicals etc. then CO can take their time looking at it instead of doing it during the interview session.

I'm currently in NVC stage of sending document I paid AOS bill waiting for instruction to send the documents.

My question is while sending DS230 did you send birth certificate, marriage certificate and police clearance certificate originals?

If certified copies where did you certified your copies?

Yes you have to send all the original documents with photocopy of each.

From any local registered notary/lawyer.

You can get them certified with any notary or lawyer.

That works, I got my copies certified at Mumbai High court as I was in the area and it is easy to find Notary there...whole bunch of them are around the High court area.

Are you sure about this? So say if the place that issued my wife's birth certificate is very difficult to find.

Can she have Vadodara(Baroda) high court just notarize it there?

This would be REALLY helpful in our situation.

If she has the original with her then thats all she needs to get copy certified.

If she has original, then make as many copies are you need, maybe couple extras and take it to any lawyer or registered notray and for a fee they would certify them.

Certified copy just means that lawyer or nortray has gone over copy and original and copy is exactly same as original and there was no alteration made on copy.

If she does not have the original then she will have to go to issuing authority to get a duplicate issued.

She has the original so we will be making copies and taking it to get certified to a lawyer. This is really good info to know!

b. Completed and signed form I-864 by the petitioner

c. IRS tax transcripts for the last three years

(Call IRS at 800-908-9946 to order them for free)

d. Petitioner's employment letter

e. Petitioner's pay stubs for the current year

IV Packet

a. Bar-coded cover sheet

b. 2 Passport-sized photographs of the beneficiary

c. Completed and signed form DS-230 Part 1 by the beneficiary

d. Completed and 'unsigned' form DS-230 Part 2 by the beneficiary

e. Photocopy of the biographic data page of the beneficiary's passport

f. Original/Certified birth certificate of the beneficiary

g. Original/Certified marriage certificate of the beneficiary and the petitioner

h. Original police certificate(s) of the beneficiary

i. Original/Certified divorce decree of the beneficiary's prior marriage(s), if applicable

j. Original military certificate of the beneficiary, if applicable

k. 1 set Photocopy of all the above civil documents

Do we need to visit the online appointment portal to make interview appointment or the Consulate (Mumbai in our case) does that?
