I am an US Citizen and Overseas citizen of India. We got married in Feb. 2011 in India and couldn't apply for marriage certificate after the wedding, while I was in India. I am planning to apply K3 for my wife now.

Can anyone guide us on the procedure to obtain marriage certificate from India. As I see from different sources on the internet, they say procedure for registering a marriage between US citizen and India is different from regular registration. Do I need to physically present in the registration office to sign in the register. Do you know how long it takes to get the certificate. Did anyone experience similar situation. Can I submit any other alternate evidence in I-130 and take marriage certificate at the time of consular interview (which might be after 5-6 months from now based on current time line). Please advise. Thank you.

Here are the major points -

1. You have to be there to register your marriage. Otherwise, it will be taken as fraud. You, your wife, your's and her family (at least one parent and couple of witness)

2. There is no difference in procedure of registering the marriage between US Citizen and Indian Citizen than between Indian Citizen.... Only difference is your US passport with valid visa should be with you and her ID proof should be with her.

3. If you know someone in registrar, it can be done in 2 days time.

4. You got to present the marriage certificate at the time of filling I130.

Good luck, if have personal question, please email me.
