Hello,

I hope I'm on the right board for this.

I married and moved here 3 years ago from England, I recieved my permanent 10 year green card last November. I am hoping someone here may have some knowledge of the dealing with the Inland Revenue as I just recieved a penalty notice from them for failing to pay taxes even though I have not had any income from the UK for the past 3 years. I told them I was moving to the USA 3 years ago and even recieved a rebate from them.

Hoping someone has an idea of what is going on.

Dave

I guess the best place to start would be http://search2.hmrc.gov.uk/kbroker/hmrc/contactus/search.ladv?sr=0&as=1&cs=ISO-8859-1&sc=hmrc&sf=&sm=0&nh=50&ha=34&tx0=49672&fl0=__dsid:&tx1=2020&raction=view

Then if you have a copy of your P85, send that to them saying that you do not believe that you owe taxes.

Thanks for this though, as I completely forgot about this! How much did you get refunded when you did it (not exactly, that'd be rude to ask, but roughly so I can have an idea...)?

I guess I'd only get a little as it is a new Tax year.

I'm afraid I can't remember how much I got refunded, I came over in March 2008 so I guess that was towards the end of the English tax year, I thik it was a £200 or so but I had a fairly low paying job before I left. They actually screwed up and sent the same refund twice which makes me wonder about the communications within the inland revenue so I'm hoping the problems I'm having are to to with that.

I'm still living in the UK, but about 5 years ago I did 3 months of self-employed work. I paid my taxes, then moved on. The next year I got a penalty notice for not paying. I paid the penalty, and immediately replied to them saying that I had not done anything that needed declaring, and have already informed them of that, and that I required my penalty to be refunded. It was within a month, and I haven't heard from them since.
