Very confused about this - the last time my wife departed MNL (SEP 2010) she was not required to pay this fee.

A couple days ago - both her and her daughter were required to pay this fee. Both are Filipino citizens and were traveling to Germany on SOFA status (I'm US Military stationed in Germany).

Just curious...

Luckily she was able to use her ATM card and withdraw the money...but something seems fishy to me about this...what say you all?

Thanks

If a ticket was bought in the PI the travel tax is included in the price but if you buy outside the PI or online.....you have 2 pay it. There is also the terminal use fee of 750 Php.

Ok....guess I completely overlooked this fee...

Perhaps it was indeed included the last time she flew (Cathay Pacific) and not this time (Gulf Air)...

Section 2 of Presidential Decree 1183, as amended, provides that the following are exempted from the payment of the travel tax:

"United States (US) Military Personnel including dependents and other US nationals with fares paid for by the US Government or on US Government-owned/chartered transport facilities."

You can apply for travel tax refund but it takes a year. The application for refund is in the link I provided.

I assume this tax is just on Philippine citizens?

Travel tax shall be levied on (a) all citizens of the Philippines; (b) permanent resident aliens; and © non-immigrant aliens who have stayed in the Philippines for more than one (1) year, who are leaving the country.

A philippine citizen with a US Green Card may avail the tax by visiting the PTA office and paying a processing fee.

Most all people have to pay the terminal fee.

Yes this would be true, but I think that he bought the ticket online and the government did not buy it. Either way, I am sure there is a way out of paying it.....but for me, I wouldnt worry about it....$80 US isnt worth the hassle or wait. (but it could have been a bad deal if they couldnt have gotten the money out of the ATM) If you guys get a refund, let me know how it went though. I will probably be making a trip back in about a year with my wife and child. We will be travelling from Italy.

You dont really need to go to PTA. The person processing your travel tax would ask you if you are a balikbayan. They are the one who will give it to the PTA. Everything is done in one area. YOou just have to wait for it.

That was my experience last May 2010.
