Does anyone know if Ana can download the state police certificate/criminal record from the internet, and if so will the consulate accept something that's downloaded from the internet, or does she have to visit the state federalis to get it?

To get the federal certificate, she'll have to go in person (or have a proxy) to the federal police office in her city (assuming there is one). For the state one, she might be able to get it online (São Paulo does that), but that really depends on the state she lives in. I don't think she needs a criminal record, unless of course, she's been convicted of a crime before.

It's hard to advise you, since we don't know where Ana lives.

I only offer advice - not even legal. Just the plain and simple kind.

Okay, so she lives in São Paulo. She can get the state certificate online if her ID was issued in the state of São Paulo: http://www2.ssp.sp.gov.br/ATESTADO/ Otherwise, she can go to a POUPATEMPO or to the Instituto de Identificação.

Federal police office:

R. Hugo D'Antola, 95 - Lapa de Baixo - São Paulo-SP / CEP 05038-090

PABX: (0xx-11) 3616-5000 Fax: 3616.6187 E-Mail: nutel.srsp@dpf.gov.br

She has to go in person or have a proxy. She'll fill out a form and have the certificate in 15 days. No fees charged.

About the federal police office: they work from Monday to Friday, from 9am to 12/12:30pm, and from 1:30pm to, I don't know, 4 pm. I'm not sure because I always made sure I went there in the morning. She could call and ask.
