Importing a car from UK to US

Looking at cars in Texas I'm looking at >$10,000 for a low mileage decent car. I can get a low mileage and decent car, even a left hand drive one for roughly equivalent to $4,000, maybe less in the UK.

Obviously though transport costs and compliance with US rules for cars will add to that cost. What i wanted to know was if anyone had done the same thing and did it work out any cheaper in the long run.
