No state is known to have successfully constructed a nuclear weapon in secret while subjected to NPT inspection.

Indeed. Its been done openly by the US and Russia ;)

And we're now holding the Iranians guilty of "possibly" infringing the treaty which we definitely have. Makes it all a bit meaningless doesn't it. International Law should only apply to people we don't like?

ya better go take that up with wikipedia then

The "arms race" of the 70's and 80's was in clear violation of the NPT. Why should other countries to adhere to laws that we ourselves apparently hold ourselves above?

In that context, claiming Iran is breaking international law by pursuing a nuclear programme becomes rather meaningless.

Actually I don't think its ok. Seems rather pointless to have international law if we continually hold ourselves to some sort of higher standard. Seems to me we're not particularly concerned by what Iran is doing as much as the fact that it is Iran that is doing it.

Same argument as with the Guantanamo Bay and Black Hole prisons - holding political prisoners without trial and subjecting them to torture doesn't lend much moral credibility to the government's position when they condemn similar abuses by other countries and "rogue states". Generally speaking it’s a "morally ambiguous" position.

So what?

Valid point. Lots of countries have in their arsenals (not necessarily indigenous, models below) which can be launched from subs.

Model (country of mfr):

  • Harpoon (US)
  • SS-9N (Russian)
  • CSS-9N (Chinese)
  • (and not to be missed, been available prior to 1982) Exocet (France)
