Hi anyone can give me some answers on this issue?

I was a foreign graduate student in the US 10 years ago and I have a SSN for working in the university as a teaching assistant (but not outside the university). Before graduation, I married with an American citizen and had my name on the SSN changed, using my old lastname as a middle name and my husband's lastname as my new last name. My diploma is also in my new name, same as SSN.

I returned and have worked in my country and have not changed my married status and name on my home country passport (In my country, I am Miss...old name) Apart from I have to write a letter to verify to my employer here that I am the same person as the one whose name is on the diploma,I have no trouble doing anything. This may be because my employer know me well. My kids who were born in my home country have report birth abroad and hold US passports and have SSN cards.

Now, the whole family is planing to move back to the US. We are under the porcess of IR1 application. According to the instruction, I am not required to change my name on my passport, but my visa will be issued as the same name as that appears on the passport. I have no problem with that. However, I was wondering about the grencard and SSN. Now my SSN card stated that I am not allowed to work in the US. I understand that after the IR1 visa process complete, I will be issued a new SSN and it will state differently and I should get greencard sometimes along the way.

My question is what would be the name that will appear on my new SSN and greencard? Would it be the same as my visa (former lastname only)? or would it be the same as the old SSN (former lastname as middle name and with my husband's lastname)? Can I choose? I would like to have greencard with my husband's lastname, but I don't want to go through changing the name on my passport which will require me to have to change so many other documents.

Anyone can help answering this question?

Thanks in advance.

You never get a new SSN your SSN is yours FOR LIFE. Your SSN will have the DHS conditions removed from it when you get your green card. All you do is take the green card to the SSN office and ask them to remove the restrictions.
