One election in southeastern New Mexico that ended in an absolute tie may be decided by a game of poker.

The Chaves County Clerk says the county commission race between Eloy Ortega and James Duffy ended with both men getting 1,004 votes. State law says the tie must be broken by a game of chance between the candidates.

Clerk Rhoda Coakley said Thursday, "They'll have to either flip a coin, draw straws or cut the cards. But I suggested they maybe play a game of 5 card stud and whoever had the best hand would win."

The clerk is still waiting on 16 military ballots, but if those ballots were not postmarked by November 2, they can't be counted and the election will remain a tie.

If the poker game is needed, it will be held on Tuesday.

Electoral reform is needed. Instead of this being the way to decide on a tie, all elections should be removed in favour of choosing candiates by way of card games. Cheap and just as likely to produce a decent result. I'm all in favour of it
