Allowed to Travel w/ AP once Green Card is Issued?

There is a good chance that once we send in the new medical, our Green Card will be issued.

However, we are traveling to Canada for Christmas- our plane tickets were bought 2 months ago.

I read a long time ago (I think it was a post by SamandBen) that once the green card is issued, your AP becomes null and void.

What happens if the green card is issued, but it hasn't arrived in the mail before we leave for our trip, or if it is issued during our holiday?

Will Sean be allowed back into the US with his current AP (does not expire until July 2011).
