? for Canadian CR-1 filers- birth certificate

So I wanted to get copies of my husband's birth certificate from Canada for later on (if needed) and he sent me the front and back of it (copies). But the B.C. is small... a littel bigger than a credit card but not a "certificate" like I am used to seeing in the U.S. There is a number on the back (like a file number or something) so I know it's a pretty official B.C. but is that going to be sufficiant in this process if it's requested? Is there a bigger one we should be looking for? He says that's all they have ever had in his family, but I'm a pessimist so I worry that there IS a more official one that he needs.

My attorney wanted ours right away...I had to request a certified notarized copy of birth certificate online. Attorney didn't want a copy of the plastic or paper card that most of us carry because it is missing parent information.

they told us when we filed (but we did file DCF) that it was needed at the time we filed our I130. the long form that they will want does have both parents names on it. I wouldnt put off getting it either....we had to get my husbands from Ontario and it was a nightmare. PS. Most Canadians NEVER get the long form so all they believbe they have is the card one. However they can get the long form.

You can request a certified copy of his birth certificate online. Just go to google and type in his provence and "birth certificate" and it will most likely point you to the right direction.

You'll need as much information as you can get about where he was born, Dr's and hospital's name, parents names and addresses at the time he was born, weight...etc.

Well according to the checklist, the Beneficiary's BC isn't required for the I-130 anymore, so I was assuming that I wouldn't need it right now, but I still want to have it for later on when it IS required.

OMG!!! Thank you soooo much for posting that!! My husband does NOT believe me about the "Long" Birth Certificate and is being a P.I.T.A about it! I love him dearly, but I want to scream "HEY!! I'm the one doing all the research here...trust me. If I SAY there's another copy we need to get.... then WE NEED TO GET IT!" But instead I just show him links and explanations and he eventually (and begrudgingly) says ok. Fortunately his mom is a bit more cooperative in this department and she'll help me I'm sure. lol

You do not need it for the I-130 submission but you will need it at the NVC stage and then at the interview if you are opting in for electronic processing.

Thanks guys!! I actually JUST finished looking for the forms and I found it!!! I'm going to have to have his family do the requesting so I'm shooting off an email for them to get moving on it. Whew!! One more tiny hurdle out of the way...I'm trying so hard to stay ahead of the game with all the things we have to keep track of.. so far so good!!

Hi,

A quick add on to this topic. I was issued an RFE for electronic processing of my long form birth certificate for EP. You can request and pay for it online http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/subjects/cards/birth_certificate.shtml.

When you scan the document make a note with it that it is an original and that it has the parents names and birth places on it. It looks like what our money does with holograms on it and a scan of it looks weird to be honest!
