Does anyone know (or have direction to) information regarding legal rights of a father in Colombia ? The situation is thus: My fiance and I are moving forward with a K-1. However she and her family have great concern that her daughter (who is 1 yr) would not be able to join us in the US. The father of her child and my fiance were never married and the daughter lives with my fiance full time. I believe he does provide some financial support for the child. Even though they were never married and have never lived together, her daughter does have his name on her birth certificate.

My concern is for the legalities of this matter in how it will affect the process. I know this is not an unusual circumstance yet it is foriegn to her and I. I have no knowledge of paternal rights in Colombia and how we should proceed. Can anyone please advise ?

You may want to checkout PBH Colombia (Poor but happy guide); From my reading of such cases; If the father grants her permision and I think you have to go to a family court and get it in writing, then you are OK othewise the child can't leave Colombia. Good Luck
