Q: IS it pronounced "Pak-a-stan" or "Pock-a-stan"?

It's "Pahhck" or "Pock" to the people who live there. American's pronounce the "a" like the letter A when it should be an "ah" sound. Kind of like Iraq. Americans say I-rack when it should be pronounced E-rock, or instead of I-ran it should be E-rahn. It's just a difference depending on where you are from.

eta: ok thats not very clear, is it? the 'i' in the middle is pronounced like the 'i' in 'into'. the 'aa' is like the aa in aardvark. and the 't' is a soft t not a hard t. like the 't' in the spanish word 'tu' and not like the 't' in the english word 'to'.

long story short, obama's pronunciation of the word is closer to the correct one than the mainstream cable news "pak-a-stan" pronunciation.

I learned that aa would be like the a in father. Easier to think of than aardvark. And to me the a's in that word sound different than in father. I guess different American accents would affect how someone says those a's. lol.

"Pork-is-tan" works also, given that the country has long required US-aid-$$ to function (and it is the only nation to have been described as having "4 capitols" including a financial-capitol outside its territory--Washington DC).

If one felt like it, one might ask why Obama or other media people say certain country names correctly and others incorrectly! No I don't have a conspiracy reason for it. They are trying to say things correct, like ooh look at me saying it right. What about France? They need to say Fran-say. Italia!! Bharat!! They need to get better at this.

And I know I do these things. I was raised saying ricotta the Italian way and people look at me like whattt? (kinda like ri-goat-a, NOT ri-catta) Yet I say Mozzarella the non-italian way. Double standards I tell ya.

I hear it both ways, Mozzarella and Moosarell. Which is the Italian way? I like saying it the second way, it sounds less awkward.
