I am having trouble picturing how this folder is supposed to look according to the USCIS website on General tips for assembling application for mailing: http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis/menuitem.5af9bb95919f35e66f614176543f6d1a/?vgnextoid=ff053d146a7ee010VgnVCM1000000ecd190aRCRD&vgnextchannel=fe529c7755cb9010VgnVCM10000045f3d6a1RCRD

It states:

The use of tabs assist in locating items listed as attachments. The tabs should be placed on the bottom and not the side for ease in filing.

What does this look like? It seems to me that tabs should be placed on the side. This seems like it would look strange. Can somebody elaborate on this or send a picture?

it says:

Use paperclips when attaching supporting personal documents to forms (do NOT use “ACCO” fasteners; staples are acceptable when attaching fees).

What qualifies as "supporting personal documents?" In other words when do we use ACCO fasteners and when do we not use them?

First of all, relax and don't worry that this is a huge deal. What happens is that they will take all your papers and punch holes at the top and fit them into their own file. So the most important help you can give them is to punch a two-hole bit at the top of all your paperwork. Then you should group related papers together with Acco clips. Google those clips and buy them. Then if you want to get crazy, get tabs/those colored thingies/whatever and label things, but position them at the bottom of the pages. But I think the tabs are the least of your priorities. And if you do the first two things you will be ahead of 90% percent of incoming files (my random estimate). If you do the tabs, label them as simply as possible: "evidence of meeting," "g-325s," etc.

Write a list of contents in your cover letter and have your file composed in the same order as your list for easy reference. If you have a streamlined, good-looking file, there's a chance it might appeal to someone's eye sooner. It won't make a real difference. If they say put the tabs at the bottom, put the tabs at the bottom. Don't do things they have to remove and reconfigure. You're fine.

You're not filing with the national benefits center, right?

What does placing tabs at the bottom physically look like?

Is it at the bottom right hand corner of every page facing towards the right?

Or is it at the bottom of the page sticking out of the folder towards the bottom?
