ICE Dropping Immigration Cases: Backdoor Amnesty?

By Mary.Bargeman / August 27th, 2010

Immigration and Customs Enforcement is dropping cases against illegal immigrants who have been detained for deportation, opting instead to let them go, saying they are not a criminal threat to the United States. With all the controversy over illegal immigration, including the Obama Administration's lawsuits against Governor Jan Brewer and the state of Arizona, including the harassment of Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who is famous (or infamous) for his tough tactics against convicts and illegal aliens, one would think ICE would be more interested in enforcing current immigration laws.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who is famous for making inmates at his jail in Maricopa County, Arizona wear pink boxers, live in tents in the summer, and putting them to work at something while they serve time, is being investigated for Civil Rights violations by the Federal Government for the umpteenth time. Why? The question here is not whether the Arizona immigration law is Constitutional, or whether Sheriff Arpaio violated inmates' civil rights with his practice of handing over illegals to ICE for deportation. The question is why the Obama Administration is not interested in enforcing immigration laws.

Our border with Mexico is absolutely overrun with illegals crossing the border. Arizona itself is the kidnapping capital of the US. A rancher was recently killed by illegals crossing the border on his ranch in Arizona, yet our government does nothing to stop the flow of illegals. The Obama Administration has promised to be tougher on immigration than the Bush Administration. It has in fact, been much softer on immigration. This Administration allows Mexican President Felipe Calderon to complain about the Arizona law, apologized for the influx of American guns across the border to Mexico, saying that part of the problem is Americans discriminating against Hispanics, and that the illegal guns are our fault. Why must this Administration apologize and kiss up to every joke of a world leader, yet do nothing to help its own citizens?

Illegals who are working illegally here in America are still committing crimes. It is illegal to be in the US without proper documentation, no matter if you are a white Canadian or a brown Mexican, or a black Haitian. Illegals along the Mexican border are bringing in illegal drugs, illegal weapons, committing violent crimes against American citizens, and they are taking American jobs because they will work for slave wages, and employers will continue to hire them at slave wages as long as they think they can get away with it. There are plenty of Americans who would be happy to perform the jobs that these illegals are performing, especially in this downwardly spiraling economy.

The Obama Administration seems to want an open-border policy, no matter the fact that the drug cartels from Mexico and South America are responsible for a high rate of crime along the Mexican Border. Murders, rapes, robberies, kidnappings, drug and gang-related activity have skyrocketed in the past two years. Promises of National Guard troops have not yet come to fruition. Arizona's simple law that prohibited racial profiling while doing everything it could to give law enforcement officials there the empowerment to uphold Constitutional and Federal immigration law was met with only lawsuits from the Federal Government. We have to wonder why.
