Hi everybody!!!

I just had my K1 visa issued and i will be moving to Dayton (Ohio) on October.

I have an european driver license from Spain and I would like to know how i have to do in order to drive ASAP in USA. (If i can use an international driver license, if i have to wait for the EAD or the greencard to get an Ohio's driver license, if i can register a car under my name and get insured,...)

I called the BMV but the girl on the phone knew less than me!!! grrrrrrrr

Thank you in advance!!! God bless

Not so sure about the Spanish license but I actually moved to Dayton last month and already have my learner's permit.

I took the test for it, was going to have it issued in my maiden name and then change it once we were married but the woman at the BMV told me just to come back once we were married, bring my marriage certificate and they'd issue it in my married name. That's all been sorted with no problems. All they asked to see was the i-94, passport, SSN etc etc, I don't even have my EAD or greencard yet. One thing though, my learner's permit is only valid up to the date my i-94 expires.

I would wait until you move over and actually go in to the office - my husband also rang and spoke to someone before I moved over and they were completely clueless.

Also, top tip, if you enjoy doddery old men jumping in front of your car out of nowhere when you're learning to drive, head to abandoned K-Mart parking lots, there are a lot of them seemingly living in the trees surrounding the one where I've been learning. Fun times.

The friendliest place I have seen to get information and learner's permit is the Beavercreek DMV there also quicker than most other places.

  • 1 month later...

Just a little update - I took my test today and they issued me a full license using just the i-94 to show status, since I haven't even applied for AOS yet.

There's only one day left on my i-94 so the license expires tomorrow, but as long as I can show a work permit within 6 months I can just renew it rather than starting all over again with a new learner's permit.

Thought it might be useful to those in/moving to Ohio.
