Hello Canadian VJers,

I am waiting for my interview at the US Consulate-Montreal. I was in Australia till 2008 and never go back there. When I moved out Australia I applied for an Australian police certificate dated Feb 2009. Now it is older than 12 months. Can I use this police certificate for the US immigration visa and show it at my interview? I have submitted it to NVC and my case completed at NVC without any problem. However, I am wondering about it at the Montreal Consulate.

Thank you very much for your answer.

Well, I applied for a different visa, but in my interview letter, they requested a police certificate issued within one year of the interview date. So after February of 2009, did you live in Canada? If so, get a canadian police certificate, and you`ll be covered.

Hope this helps!

I believe that you are required to have a police certificate for every place that you have lived for 6 months or more since the age of 16, and those certificates must not be older than 1 year. I would suggest that you look into getting a current one, as it can delay you by months with the current processing times in Montreal if they ask for a current one at the interview and you do not have it, as well as the additional time that it will take to obtain a new one from Australia. A little bit of hassle now can save you a lot of grief in the future!!

Thank you very much "Vero and Chris" and "Colleens". I have sent a current (10 days old) Canadian Police certificate with the 15 months old Australian one, and I had no problem at NVC. Now it is the turn at Montreal. I know that the new one is better but it is very hassle to order an Australian Police Certificate. So if it is unnecessary I should use the old one I already have. I need to ask someone in Australia to help me order it since I need a money order in Australian Dollar for the payment and this money order cannot be bought in Canada.

Well, you can go on the Australia forum, maybe you`ll find help there too...

Thank you very much for your reply. I bought an international bank draft in Australian dollar at RBC. Hopefully, Australian Federal Police will accept this bank draft as they usually do with an international money order.
