I have actually had a few interviews over lunch. One that sticks out in my mind was when the manager took me to a seafood restaurant. I am allergic to seafood. I plowed through lunch, and ended up leaving it in the bathroom back at the office when I went to pick up my bag. I ended up getting the job, and that was a big joke in the office for the duration. I asked my eventual boss after the fact if it would have made any difference had I spoken up, he said that it probably would, he is a huge seafood enthusiast.

I find that odd that a boss would be so dumb to care whether someone likes the food they are an enthusiast about, he had to be kidding that it could have made a difference if you spoke up. If my husband got taken for an eating interview at a steak place, he is a vegetarian, he would have to tell them he won't eat meat and if that negatively influenced his interview, then a "screw you" might be in order.

People aren't always rational. A manager at the company I work for only interviews people he knows through his fantasy football league.

That's right, Rob. A convenient excuse for your well-known rampant bulimia.

That's idiotic.

It is what it is. I got hired at a previous job for no better reason other than the fact that the hiring manager and I both started off (right out of college, at different times) at the same company and worked for the same douchebag. Once that became apparent, we hit it off and I've never seen an offer come in so quick.

Of course, she turned out to be the worst manager I've ever worked for but that's another story.

Well the 'hookers & blow' diet wasn't working out at that point, ####### was I supposed to do?

Bulimia is for pussies. You should have persevered in the hookers and blow diet. It takes a few weeks to settle into, but the results are FANTASTIC.star_smile.gif

That's idiotic.

It may be, but I find the whole interview thing idiotic anyway. Not that I am condoning this course of action by itself... But under a "normal" process to hire someone based upon a 3 page resume they created themselves (and just how many people inflate their own resume? I know I have, in the past!) and then a couple of 30 minute chats that puts unrealistic pressure onto someone to perform, where nervous people may lose out, and pressure on recruiting manager to find a lot out about the candidate (real skill level, fit). In this case I guess he's interviewing people he knows, and may be in a position to judge if they would be appropriate for the job.

As for the perfect way to interview, haven't found it yet and don't think I will either :)

I once knew a hiring manager in Amsterdam who would take interviewees to a strip joint, and some in Scotland who did it down the pub. A friend even told me of one where the hiring manager screwed up a core router and asked the interviewee to troubleshoot and fix it, I bet they worked for Telewest because my service was always bouncing. I of course have screwed up worse without it even being for an interview, but that is a totally different tangent.
