I'm currently waiting for the NVC to process my case, and my wife needs to get police clearance in Bangalore, India. Do we have to get it from the passport office (it's about a 2 hour drive away, so it's somewhat of a hassle)? Is it possible to approach the local police station? What's the time frame to get the police clearance.

She got her passport in I think December or January.

You will need to submit 2 police clearance certificates to NVC if your wifes passport was issued more than 6 months ago.

1) From the passport office that issued your wifes passport

2) From the district police office that serves your wifes current domicile in India.

VivekJay is right. You'll need 2 PCCs.

btw, if your wife's passport was issued within the last 6 months, then only need passport office PCC (according to chennai consulate website). my wife also got her PCCs from bangalore. she was lucky enough to have her passport issued w/in the last 6 months. when it came time for our NVC work, we were still w/in the 6 months range and so only submitted the b'lore passport office PCC. eventually we got the local b'lore police station pcc, but chennai never asked for it (even though our interview date was after the 6 months range). DO make sure your passport PCC is within 6 months of the interview date, or you'll have to get another one. ie, dont get the passport PCC too much ahead of time. start getting it immediately after you receive the NOA2 from uscis...
