The Southern states didn't want the North to dictate to them on whether they could own slaves.

if you read any history written before 1965 you will see that the principle issue was unbalanced taxation.

in the lincoln douglas debates lincoln himself indicated that he had no problem with slavery.

(As you yourself say later, it's an op-ed piece.) For those who don't know, Ted Poe was a long-time and very highly respected judge in the Houston area, who was known for creative sentencing with punishments that nevertheless still fit the crimes (& the perpetrators). It was very seriously a loss for the area's judicial system when he ran for Congress. It's good that he's there (he's intelligent, involved, & concerned); the drawback is that he's not my Congressman.

That may be, but his op-ed piece is a big flaccid bag of hot wind that smells none too good!

It must really piss you off that most Americans agree with the congressman. At least Poe can come up with more than cheap one line quips from the peanut gallery.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995

No, it doesn't "piss me off". I think it is a badly written piece, sloppily argued with a poor premise. I guess that pisses you off, but I suppose that's what happens when you are so emotionally invested in the subject that you'll buy any old rhetorical tripe.
