Extended wait time after embassy interview

We applied for our K-1 in March 2009, which was approved by the USCIS in October 2009. January 2010 he went in for the interview at the embassy and had his fingerprints taken. Our case is now with the Department of State and we are given no details as to its status or the reason for such an extended wait (from everyone else's stories, the interview is the last step). The embassy says that it is out of their hands and they are simply waiting for final approval from the Department of State. What could be going on to delay our visa so long? Is this normal?

It sounds like your case is in AP (Administrative Processing). More than likely your fiancee's name came up in a routine database check for criminal history in their country (this can happen if your fiancee has a fairly common name).

Unfortunately AP can last anywhere from several weeks to several months, so at this point the only option is to wait. I would try to contact the DOS and ascertain if you're still in AP. Check back with them once a week until you are finished...
