I guess they had to find some way of rationalising the fact that Stalin's regime could barely afford to equip them. At the least, it would take patriotism (and a good deal more besides) to attack a machine gun nest with nothing other than a wooden club and strong language

I think what the bleeding hearts seem to forget is we were in a war that had to be finished not their hands slapped to come back another day.
