so the school VP was named rodriguez?

Yes, I am sure he is an agitator for some underground movement dedicated to turning America into an extension of Mexico.

A school uniform would solve these sorts of difficulties.

I am not really that familiar with the origins of Cinqo de mayo, is it a sort of Mexican version of St Patrick's day?

Cinco De Mayo is supposedly Mexican Independence Day.

My understanding is that wearing the American flag is disrespectful to the flag itself.

the school is going to open up a firestorm in that community if they're not careful.

OK but is it like St Patricks day when it is celebrated in the US? I mean by that the origins of the day are very definitely nothing to do with the US but it is celebrated almost more in the US than it is in Ireland itself, I guess because the US is proud of its Irish ancestry affiliation - I mean, it is not confined to the Irish community and lots of people wear green and Irish flags etc. I do not think anyone believes that wearing green, waving Irish flags etc means that anyone wants Ireland or Irish culture to dominate the US cultural landscape.

The difference is, you don't see people wearing Irish clothing/accessories outside of an Irish holiday. You do see (especially in the southwestern US) a lot of Mexican related material each and every day. To some a day that pushes that even further and celebrates it, is very bothersome. Especially when you see the activists out there who tout immigration reform while carrying Mexican flags instead of American flags.

In your view anything that overtly draws attention to anything to do with mexican culture is incendiary because there are extremists that use the same symbolism - bearing in mind that symbolism is not in and of itself connected to any dangerous or violent organisation? This day of celebration should be banned?

You amuse me by how you try and take something I said and make more of it of how it reflects upon me or my views.

I'm just explaining why some people feel the way they do about the situation and why it might upset them. Cinco De Mayo doesn't bother me. It's a day. It's done and over with.

I am not trying to do anything except find out what you think. If you don't have a problem with Cinco de Mayo and view it as the same kind of day as St Patrick's day, no problem. That is exactly how it appears to me, just one of those stupid days that a lot of Americans celebrate, mostly as a vehicle to make someone some cash.

Sure, I agree.

Incidentally, public schools in Europe require students to wear standardised school uniforms - in part to head off these sorts of situations. Why does the US not do this?

some of public school systems here have started this policy. they're saying it has helped curb some of the gang activity.

It's a good idea for a lot of reasons, not least because there are no 'what shall I wear today? I can't go to school unless I wear...' ####### too ;)

are school uniforms what the vj left and right can come together on?

i am sure we'd run into the issue eventually.

Except for the libertarians, they don't like rules of any sort.;)

When I was a kid I didn't like the rules, now I do
