It certainly seems as if threats of violence from right-wing activists, targeting members of Congress, have been far more common of late. Apparently, this is not just a perceived shift -- there's been a quantifiable rise.

Anger over the health-care overhaul has led to a nearly threefold increase in recent months in the number of serious threats against members of Congress, federal law enforcement officials said.

The lawmakers reported 42 threats in the first three months of this year, compared with 15 in last three months of 2009, said Senate Sergeant-at-Arms Terrance W. Gainer, who had information about threats involving both chambers. [...]

Nearly all of the recent threats appear to come from opponents of the health-care overhaul, said Gainer, who also served four years as chief of the U.S. Capitol Police. And, he said, there have been "significantly more" threats against House members than against senators.

Law-enforcement officials are taking these developments seriously. Not only have there been arrests, but some congressional offices are "receiving additional equipment to help with the screening of mail," while others are taking renewed security measures to help prevent incidents.

To be sure, there's a difference in severity among these threats. On the one end of the spectrum we see plenty of messages from unhinged conservatives (letters, emails, voice mails) that include violent rhetoric, most of which are probably random nuts blowing off steam. On the other, we see at least one right-wing activist cutting a gas line at the Charlottesville home of Rep. Tom Perriello's (D-Va.) brother. In between, conservative extremists have thrown bricks through windows and made specific death threats.

Obviously, this is no laughing matter. But part of me finds a certain macabre humor in the absurdity of it all -- there is no modern precedent for a group of American political activists becoming this violent in response to legislation they don't understand.

I'm not in a position to know the personal details of those responding violently to the Affordable Care Act, but given general demographic information, it's extremely likely that most of those turning to criminal behavior to express their outrage are also likely to benefit personally from the new law.

There's just something extraordinary about right-wing extremists reacting violently to bogus arguments.

Yawn, nothing new here.

(except the target)

If you need more. let me know.

Glad you are finally concerned about such matters.

I love the selective outrage. I love the fact that the CBC walked through the crowd, hoping for a response, and getting none, fabricated a lie, that can't be substantiated, despite cameras rolling, and numerous personal recording devices present.

If the left actually had any balls, this could be frightening.

Now you're being ironic. Anyone who threatens to use violence against elected officials for political means is wrong...period. Danno posts some random pics he's got as ####### for tat, rather than condemning those who resort this kind of thuggery. You both are pathetic and a shame to democracy.

Ahh Steve, you crack me up.

I have condemned this type of thing all along. Just because I don't repeat my condemnation in each and every post just means I am tired of repeating it.

There is a time to "water the tree of liberty" but that moment comes with there is no hope of the system working, we clearly are not there, threats of harming public officials are as we have seen carried out by loons in the dark.

All the threats against Bush were done in the public square ... as you can see from the pics, Get real.

But the question remains: why are you just now interested in the subject?

Because Steve and the rest of the commies progressives know that they cannot possibly win, without "educating" the public. Brainwashing our children is not enough, and as long as there is free speech, there will always be someone to show the fallacies in their arguments. But, given enough feigned outrage, perhaps they will soon have the means to silence all opposition, and put any remaining resistance in gulags, or concentration camps.

Legally, you can write up your own sign that says just about anything and go to one of those teabagger circle jerks because the 1st Amendment gives you that right. If you, however, write a personal note to Speaker Pelosi that threatens harm to herself or her property if she votes a particular way and you'll be arrested because making personal threats is against the law. Most High School students understand the difference, but for some reason, such principles of a democracy are beyond your comprehension.

Steve, there are over 300 million people in this country close to half can relate to the Tea Party crowd... how many people wrote her?
