renewing cali state id?

(I'm not sure which forum to post this in, so forgive me if i have put it in the wrong one)

When i first came to the USA last year (on K1), i applied for a Californian State ID.. Then months later, i received my 2 year GC. Anyway, I got a letter from DMV last week and they said that my state ID is going to expire soon and to renew it for a limited term extension. (i have to send them a photocopy of my legal presence document).

Now, i was wondering... do i HAVE to renew the state ID? Or do i not need it, now that i have the GC? and will anything happen if i don't renew it?Many thanks in advance for any advice?:star:

06/06/2011 - Check cashed

06/22/2012 - Mailed N-400 package to Phoenix/AZ Lockbox

06/26/2012 - NOA date

06/28/2012 - Check cashed

06/29/2012 - NOA arrived in the mail

07/02/2012 - Biometrics appointment letter arrived in mail

07/19/2012 - Biometrics appointment

07/30/2012 - Received text +email. Application placed in line for interview

07/30/2012 - Received text +email in evening - interview letter sent

08/03/2012 - Received interview letter

09/19/2012 - Interview - passed interview/test!!

10/24/2012 - Oath Ceremony!

California State ID is an optional thing for those who don't have a drivers license or other form of ID. You have your GC now which can be used to prove your identity, so the State ID is no longer needed. Don't renew if you don't feel like it! :)

04/13/10 - Email - EAD Card production ordered, Touch on my AP (Day 78)

04/15/10 - Interview @ 10:30am - APPROVED!!! Email - Green Card production ordered! (Day 80)

04/16/10 - My AP received in mail (no approval email), ANOTHER email EAD Card production ordered, Touch on I-765, I-485 & I-130 (Day 81)

04/20/10 - Green card status changed to post-decision activity, Touch on I-765 & I-485 (Day 85)

04/26/10 - Greencard RECEIVED!!!! (Day 91)

You don't need it, but you want to, for two reasons:

1) Flashing the GC every time you are in the supermarket, paying with a check, identifies you as an immigrant. So not cool.

2) The GC is not only valuable at $310 (if you lose it), but also your one and only "master" ID. If you lose it, you are screwed. If you lose your state ID, you show your GC and get a new one for $12 in no time.

Put your GC in a safe place. Mine is where my passport is: in my safe at home. I take it out when I need my passport, basically once I travel internationally.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . .
