That is one aspect. Personally, I don't want food that is grown in chemically laden soil. Having cousins who actually work in various research fields, I follow their lead, and they are heavily into organic. These guys are also the furthest thing from being considering a tree hugging nut-job liberal hippy.

My father's first degree was in agriculture and started working for Dow Chemical right out of college (early 1950's). He also did a lot of gardening and had used commercial fertilizers, but he can tell you that the best way to treat your soil and keep it fertile, is to use things like mulching. We had a huge garden back in the 70's and we'd till the soil, but after so many seasons, my father found it near impossible to grow anything.

Where you guys in Arizona?

Yep. In what was once a very small town, Gilbert - which was once the cotton capital of the world at one time. When we first moved there, we were surrounded by alfalfa fields, which were rotated with cotton to keep the soil fertile. They also use to use crop dusters. In fact, we used to get all excited to see them crop dusting while we were standing outside waiting for the school bus. Good thing, none of grew an extra limb or eyeball.

As if that's the reason why people buy these foods - most people buy organic because of the farming methods not because people believe an organic tomatoe has more vitamin c than a conventionally grown one

No, I buy organic because I don't want to take any chances with my health.

An organic tomato has the same amount of Vitamin C as a conventional one, but less pesticides and chemical fertilizers.

But conventional has all this added value! You're paying more for less, sucker

I'm paying more now. You will end up paying more in medical bills in the future.

We'll see who's the sucker then.

:help:

I don't think you read what I wrote.

Well, you read it, but I think you took it literally :(

Not all organic veg tastes better, but locally sourced farmer's market produce normally does. I agree with Julianna on this, necessary chemical intervention is ok, routine chemical intervention is not, and is counterproductive on many levels.

No, I didn't try it yet, my plants are only just appearing this year but I should probably start applying it preventatively?

well the organic veggies and fruit i buy from this market called Fresh and Easy.. haven't had anything that hasn't tasted good yet...

Take a look, a lot of what they sell is locally sourced. Mind you, that is easier in California. I don't understand bananas though, does anyone know what they taste like straight from the tree? I feel they should taste better, but don't know for sure :)

A perfect example of you getting tripped up on the terminology.

"Lazy hippie thinking," is what I call it, and a lack of understanding of what the definition of "organic" farming all too often is.

In 1939, Lord Northbourne coined the term organic farming in his book Look to the Land (1940), out of his conception of "the farm as organism," to describe a holistic, ecologically-balanced approach to farming—in contrast to what he called chemical farming, which relied on "imported fertility" and "cannot be self-sufficient nor an organic whole."[3] This is different from the scientific use of the term "organic," to refer to a class of molecules that contain carbon, especially those involved in the chemistry of life.

The National Organic Program has fewer than twelve total employees.[4] On February 4, 2008, it announced that it was reorganizing into three divisions: Standards Development and Review; Accreditation, Auditing, and Training; and Compliance and Enforcement.[5] The latter position remains unfilled.

In August 2008 the NOP announced that 15 of 30 federally accredited organic certifiers had been placed on probation for various violations of USDA organic standards.[4]
