I'm assembling my packet for the US Consulate and need to get a police records check. I live in Vancouver and the wait time advertised on their site is up to 120 days. I'm wondering how long it's taken other forum members to receive a PRC either here in Vancouver or elsewhere. Would it be quicker to do it through the RMCP?

Thanks for your advice.

If you are currently in Canada and dont have a criminal record (i.e. dont need the fingerprint check, just a name check), it is a lot faster than that.

Some police stations will do it for you.

I had to go to a private firm because my local police station doesnt.

I payed $40 and Im supposed to receive the certificate within 7-10 days.

Btw, when I checked the RCMP website, it said they didnt offer these services at the Montreal office, so to look up private cies that do in the Yellow pages under "'police clearance", "police check" or "fingerprinting services canada".

Jellie, for us we needed two police checks, one from Hong Kong (where we were) and one from Australia. The Hong Kong one was easy. Just went to police HQ, had the fingerprints done and they submit the check directly to the US Embassy in about a week.

Australia was another story. We ordered a "name check only" and it took about a month to receive. At the interview the US Embassy in Hong Kong would not accept a name check only when we had to order another one with fingerprints which took another month plus another fee.

Perhaps the requirments vary by US Embassy. The turnaround times do vary by country.

Good luck to you on your journey.

We walked into the RCMP station in Nanaimo and they said it would take 2 or 3 days.

Fill out a form and pay the fee, I forget the exact amount but it was reasonable.

Give your local station a phone call to confirm.

When I was applying for my K-1 through Vancouver, I went to a local RCMP detachment and showed them the Packet 3 checklist. They knew exactly what I needed. Because I have no criminal record, they were able to do it right away. 10 minutes wait. Only thing that took any length of time was they made me go to the local post office and get a money order, since they wouldn't take cash, credit, or debit, and I didn't have a chequebook handy.

I know it's significantly longer if you have a criminal record, but I don't know how much longer.

Just did the name check in Manitoba took I think 2-3 weeks dont remember the price. No problems but they did say the fingerprint would have been longer.. and I'm pretty sure they didnt have a expedite method. FYI its up to you but try and get 2. Im glad i did because the NVC said they lost mine and needed another, Sent it in but during my interview in montreal they gave me back the extra one i sent in. They said they had duplicates so either they found it somewhere or they were testing us to see if it was real.. Either way I would say try and order 2 because of the wait time may be long.
