California's Watson to Retire

Rep. Diane Watson (D-Calif.) is retiring at the end of this Congress, a Democratic source confirmed to CQ-Roll Call on Wednesday. Speculation about possible successors has centered on former state Assembly Speaker Karen Bass, who would be a favorite to win a Democratic primary should she run

Watson, 76, is the second member of Congress whose retirement has been confirmed today. Rep. Vern Ehlers (R-Mich.) announced this morning that he would not seek a ninth term, pushing to 17 the number of GOP members not seeking re-election. Watson is the 12th Democrat who will leave Congress at the end of 2010.

Watson is in her fourth full term representing California's 33rd district, which takes in West Los Angeles and Culver City, Calif. She won a 2001 special election in the heavily Democratic district and has successfully defended her seat since then with more than 80 percent of the vote.

She was my representative for a lot of years, and has been divisive since day one.
