I dont underestimate the value they have on "family honor"? , so by me saying I dont think we should stand around and let this happen while they debate it out has led you to that conclusion? Do you seriously think debating this is the answer?

Later on in this thread you go on to say that what you meant by your missionary statement was that it would broaden my mind, come on is that really what I need to experience to condemn this, do I just not get it?

I'm not trying to offend you by any means, the way you think is a normal reaction. But what you need to get is that you may try but probably Will not change the mindset of these people through your plans, they have had their culture and religion and doing what they do way before you found out about this story on VJ today... it's engrained in their minds what "family honor" is and the appropriate punishment for anyone who dishonors this, if true change will come to them, it will come from within themselves only, answer this: why do these "honor killings" still occur in countries such as the UK and US even with the strict laws and punishment on murder?

Debating it on VJ has no effect whatsoever.

If you support, say the UN, you are already supporting an organisation that is working towards changing these attitudes by working with people within the country, not allowing government figures to demand 'change or else' from the comfort of the White House, or wherever.

Education really is a good answer to many of these problems. Educated women rarely allow themselves to be used in this way.

On a tangent, I heard on the radio that even in counties like Bangladesh, when women have access to contraception and have a choice between working and having 8 children, they choose work and the birth rate is plummeting in these countries. The problem is that the effective birth control solutions are losing a lot of funding and the results could be tragic.

Share that bumper sticker philosophy with the woman and children of Darfur and see how many friends you make. We need to stand up for whats right rather it be Turkey or Darfur.

No one here is condoning or defending this type of behaviour as acceptable. I am not sure what you mean by 'stand up for what is right' though. As if merely saying it somehow means something.

I was actually very surprised when they gave the figures of how birth rates have dropped, not only in western cultures, but in these very poor regions as well and all because of education and birth control. It gave me quite a boost, and yes, definitely worth sending in a donation for ;)

Just to be clear and let you know what Im thinking, I think that we need to demand change from the Turkish government and hold them accountable if they dont, the the UN and all countries need to stand up and put there foot down if they dont quit giving these offenders light sentences or look the other way and feed us the BS that it was a suicide.

I never said it was going to be easy, it will be very hard. Impossible if we think that having a debate with such backwards thinking will be affective.

In the US and the UK we dont look the other way or give light sentences when this happen so your comparing apples to oranges, that said what have we done here in the US and the UK, we demanded that this will not be done and we hold them accountable, thats all I wont from Turkey. My stand is a very reasonable stance on this situation and to act like I dont get it or that I am not seeing the big picture is a dishonest approach to POV.

Turkey wants to be part of the European Union, take a wild guess why they still have not been able to achieve that goal.

What do you mean your not sure what I mean by 'stand up'. I have made it clear about what should be done, in a nutshell hold the Turkish Gov. accountable and let them know having a debate will not cut it, the gov. should be demanding it from the Kurdish is SE and hold them accountable if they dont comply.

I never said anyone was defending it or found it acceptable, what I took issue with was the 'do nothing let them work it out' attitude.

"demand change from the Turkish government and hold them accountable".

I guess we could act as though there are no intricacies to international politics... It wouldn't be the truth of course.

Gene what do you think we should do if Turkey does nothing to solve this problem? Let it be, its not our problem?
