Obtaining Canadian Citizenship for my youngest child

Hi there.

My youngest daughter was born here in sunny California. How do I go about obtaining Canadian citizenship for her. I was born outside Canada in 1970 and received citizenship though naturalization. My local consulate would be in LA California.

Do I need to go there in person? If I can mail in the forms do I have to send them my citizenship card will they send it back? Do I send them to the consulate or to Novia Scotia? My daughter is only 10 months old, so I fill out the forms as a parent- or do fill them out on her behalf- if so do I sign her name?

I was born in Canada became a Naturalized US citizen. Two children born in California now age 16 and 17. About 13 or 14 yrs ago I was able to work thru the Canadian consulate in Los Angeles by mail and eventually recieve "Canadian Citizen Certificates" for them (with their baby pictures on them!) It was pretty easy and relatively inexpensive.

Don't know if things have changed but I would start with a phone call to the LA Consulate.

It depends on when your daughter was born. Canada changed its citizenship laws so that children born on or after April 17, 2009 could only get Canadian citizenship if they were born in Canada or one of their parents was born in Canada. If you were born outside of Canada and got your citizenship through your parents and your daughter was born outside of Canada after April, 2009, she is no longer eligible to be a Canadian citizen. If she was born before that then she is. If you are living in Canada or intend to take up permanent residence in Canada you can sponsor her and she would become a permanent resident in Canada and then be eligible for citizenship.
