That's nonsense - there are plenty of opportunities for entrepreneurs.

Start your own business - you don't need a 4 year college degree to do that, just a good idea

and common sense.

and getting off that pc or away from that tv for a change will help a great deal...

 especially since it doesn't help at all, only makes matters worse and gives people no incentive to go work for or manufacture/invent what they're getting for free.

It's true. If you look at the most generous countries in terms of welfare, there are still a hell of a lot of people who are in poverty and refuse to work.

That said, I do believe the US does not do enough to get the poor on their feet. Like anything, you need a balance, you need to meet people half way. Giving them everything or absolutely nothing just does not work period.

The US also has a huge problem with illegal aliens, that have driven salaries down into the ground. The US has more illegal aliens than the entire population of over 167 countries around the world. It's absolutely ridiculous to think these people have not impacted wages in a negative manner.

That's also quite risky. How many people are in a position to take that much risk, when most businesses fail within the first year.

In general, you need money to make money. The majority of the world cannot be Google founders.

Who can open up a store or market a product without any capital?

Do you have any idea how little you actually get from welfare/food stamps? Sure you can live on it I suppose, but don't expect much in the way of a quality of life.

The problem is even if you work 60-80 hours a week, you may not really have much better quality of life anyway ( Making at or near minimum wage), so what is the point.

Ok, here's an example. I bought a piano at auction for $50 the other day, I'm gonna polish it up and sell it, will definetely get over $1 000 for it. It took only $50 capital, the rest was incentive and a bit of smarts.

The other day someone said that a family on foodstamps get $500 + of food stamps. I have never spent that much on food pm, even when throwing a couple of parties a month.

You are still relying on others. Starting from scratch is hard anywhere. In America, it's probably 100 times as hard as you cannot work a evening part-time job or anything like that to earn decent cash.

Such jobs just don't pay the $14.50 (per hour) USD equivalent that even cashiers receive in Aus, for example. With that sort of salary, you can actually work your way up.

true. you think mark meant to start a business on your own and without any help if you already have nothing? that won't work unless you're willing to go into a lot of debt for it.

I've owned my own business. I know how much it cost to start it and how much work it took.

There are many many people who work their asses off going to school and working at the same time, yes they have to pay of student loans for years, but they do it and it can be done. If you wanna live in this society where success is measured by material wealth and you wanna keep up, do what is necessary, simple.

A month for a family? With what groceries cost, that's not really that much. A couple with no kids can easily spend $75 - 90 per week on groceries. Add kids and that will keep growing.

I guess you could just eat ramen, but thats probably going to lead to expensive health problems later.

It's not impossible, just hard.

Providing people with the basics and then holding them accountable, as the Aussie welfare system does, is probably the best method to get them on their feet. For example, when you receive Australia's generous welfare, you are required to search for 14 or so jobs I believe per fortnight. After 6 or so months of being on welfare, you are required to either attend school or work for the dole. Work for the dole means take up various jobs around your community, that benefit the community, that is paying for your welfare. Win win for everyone.

We need to start paying people to fix up and clean their ghettos. However, my hunch says they will not want to do or or will ask for "mo monee".

Only because the majority are stupid people.

You can't fix stupid.

Any people in particular?
