Two more Rhode Island communities have announced plans to consolidate services, in an effort to save money.

Cranston Mayor Allan Fung and Warwick Mayor Scott Avedisian said on Monday, that they have begun to discussing the merger of several departments, including fire services, libraries, and animal control.

Officials will conduct an in-house study in order to determine whether or not privatizing services would make sense.

“Obviously, there is a lot to consider within each proposal, but we are committed to having these discussions to see where they lead,” Mayor Avedisian said.

“I’m hopeful that we’ll be able to consolidate at least some of these areas in order to reduce expenses and provide improved services to Warwick and Cranston residents.”

Mayor Fung added, “I am eager to work with Warwick to look at more efficient ways to serve our constituents. Given the tough fiscal times that we are in it is imperative that we pursue all savings opportunities.”

In 2009, Warwick and East Greenwich shared a yard waste collection program which benefited both parties involved.

Recently, North Providence and Johnston mayors announced combined services.
