Coakley lost because she failed to turn out the base.

In the special election for Massachusetts Senator, young voters (age 18-29) preferred Democrat Martha Coakley over Republican Scott Brown by 58%-40% (with 2% for other candidates), according to a survey of 1,000 voters conducted on January 19, by Rasmussen Reports.

About 15% of Massachusetts citizens between the ages of 18-29 turned out to vote. For citizens age 30 and older, turnout was about 57%.

For comparison: 25% of young citizens (age 18-29) voted in the 2008 Massachusetts presidential primaries, and 47.8% of young Massachusetts citizens voted in the 2008 presidential elections.

One would hope that they learn the right lesson - don't retract but grow some balls and push the agenda you've been elected to push. Rest assured, though, that that lesson won't be learned. Balls have become a rare commodity in politics.

 yah keep pushing that far left agenda. & the people will keep pushing towards the right...ask coakley

You didn't read the piece quoted in the OP, did you? Those that could have put her into office stayed home. I'd suspect they didn't stay home for what you erroneously refer to as a far left agenda being pushed but for the lack of that happening.

now we have had this discusion before & in no way shape or form were the house or senate bills a 'reform' bill. the take over is the gov't controlling 18% of the economy. a reform bill will look to decrease that 18% not grow it & mandate it.

No takeover of health care has been proposed or was anywhere near any discussion of Congress. What's pending is anything but a takeover - it's largely a health care corporate welfare bill. This is why the base stayed home - they're mad at the Dem's inability to translate the solid majorities given to them into an advancement of a progressive agenda.

i have always found it funny when dems, who are in trouble of losing an election, start talking about getting the word out on campus. it strikes me as meaning, "let's go to campus, those idiots will vote for anyone" (or however you want to phrase it). it seems demeaning to me.

Smoke, I have to ask, do you think

1, Health care as it stands is a testament to the greatness of the American Nation?

2, The GOP have contributed anything positive to the health care reform debate?

3, That the US public are happy with the status quo on health care?

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

no. US healthcare needs help...not an overhaul...aka takeover

2, The GOP have contributed anything positive to the health care reform debate?

they have been shut out of all discussion & any amendment they offered was immediately blown out of the water.

3, That the US public are happy with the status quo on health care?

the ones that have healthcare want to keep it & not subsidize everyone that doesn't..weather by their own choice or by their means. they are willing to help those without the means, they just don't want to pay for those that choose not to have it.

When the GOP was in power, what plans did they put in place to 'overhaul' the system? What are they currently campaigning to achieve in health care reform? Can you point me to specific platform statements from any GOP members?

It may well be that the liberals have hogged the debate, but certainly I do not remember one health care reform measure being put forward during the Bush years. Now, granted I didn't live in the US during all of them, but, since I have been here, I have not heard one GOP member engage in a positive discussion about meaningful health care reform. You seemed so certain with your answers, I assumed you could simply point me in the direction of some GOP members statements. I guess you simply don't know you just believe that must be true without any evidence.
