Frist cancels UF talk with Daschle; heads to Haiti

Former U.S. Sen. Bill Frist has canceled his appearances today at the University of Florida, but he has a heck of an excuse: He's gone to Haiti to help with earthquake relief efforts.

Frist, R-Tenn., was scheduled to speak with another former Senate majority leader -- Tom Daschle, D-S.D. -- on bipartisanship in the health-care debate. Daschle will still be appearing at UF.

Frist, a surgeon, also planned to give a separate speech on global health. Instead, he announced Sunday through Twitter that Haiti was in need of surgeons and he was going there.

Daschle will still be speaking at the health-care event, which is being held at 7 p.m. in Pugh Hall. There are no tickets left but it will be broadcast at WUFT-FM, 89.1 FM in Gainesville.

The Graham Center for Public Service, the event's sponsor, also plans to provide a live Webcast on its Web site, www.bobgrahamcenter.ufl.edu.

The event comes as the White House and congressional Democrats continue working on a final health-care bill. Daschle co-authored a book advocating universal health care.

He had been in line to be President Barack Obama's Health and Human Services secretary, until unpaid taxes led him to withdraw from consideration.
