My Fiancee had her medicals the last 2 days. She reported back this morning and was told she has to have the Sputum test which will be next week on 12th,13th,14th. They found slight scarring on one of her lungs. She told me that the majority of the women that were there with her had the same results. What is the procedure for extracting this culture from the lungs?

This is a small set back as her interview was on the 14th of next week. I assume that St. Lukes will cancel this appointment as they stated that if the culture is okay in 8 weeks they will reschedule her interview in March. I just pray that all is okay and when they make new interview appointment that I can bring her across by May 2010. Just not sure how long between the time she is cleared and actual interview appointment will be!

Will she need to have new Cenomar and Philippine police clearance updated when she makes interview? She just got all this in early Dec 09.

Cenomar is good for 6 months. NBI one year but good to have update right before the interview.

Sputum sample is obtained by coughing deeply and expelling the material that comes from the lungs into a sterile cup. Hopefully it's negative as if positive they have to stay in Manila for 6 months to get treated.

I hope she gets out of this really quick. Yes, St. Luke's will help you reset the interview.

As for the documents, the CENOMAR is valid for six months and the NBI clearance for a year.

Hakuna matata.

God bless us all.

What they are checking for is TB Mycobacterium tuberculosis This is common In the Philippines, and can delay the Visa Process up to but not limited to 6 month. In the PI. Some/most Filipinos have had BCG vac's but this can wear off over time. She may have had TB and was treated for, and now has only scaring? With TB you can get very sick or even death

The tuberculin skin test performed by the Mantoux method is the most commonly used method for identifying TB infection. But What they, (St. Luke) is looking for is active tuberculosis (TB) they can not hold a immigrant visa with only LTBI this is why they only do a chest x-ray and not a skin test on adults. LTBI will not show up in a chest x-ray

LTBI is Latent TB infection Latent means you breathed in TB germs into your body and they are dormant (sleeping) you can not spread TB at this point but at any time in your life TB can come activate and you become sick. They can check for LTBI with a skin test

LTBI.With out tretment you run a 1 in 10 chance 10% with treatment 1 in 100 1% chance in your life time of getting TB.

Thanks for the information as it is very helpfull. I spoke with my brother who is an MRI/X-RAY Tech. I told him that over half the women with my Fiancee were told the same thing. There was many there that day! This led me to be a bit suspicious. How could that many woman have the same problem. He told me that it is very possible that the x-ray lens and slides were not cleaned properly before the x-rays were taken. This could lead to false images being reported. I would think that St. Lukes would have thought of this since so many had the same problem. The easiest thing to have done was cleaned the equipment and retake all the x-rays. But sometime the easy way is not the way to be.

I forgot to add that she has never had TB nor been treated for it. She has mild asthma and her doctor sends her every January for chest x-rays. Last January 09 she took chest x-rays and her lungs were clear.

EDIT: I would have your love one tested for LTBI very simple skin test, the PI is a High Risk country, you may have LTBI and don’t even know it! In the US it's a nine month treatment of medication.

You can get TB any place any time, and have had LTBI for years with out ever knowing. If her lungs were clear and now are not who knows if it's a bad x-ray or worse, hard to say at this point St. Luke's is a very good hospital. wish her the best!

There was a thread before about someone who has been told to undergo a sputum test because they saw a scar on her x-ray, but then she asked for a second opinion, had her x-ray taken in one hospital here in Metro Manila and it was clear.

I did the same for my wife, but no need for anak, she was not required to under go a medical or interview. As cheap as it is to have complete exam in the PI it's a smart idea!

Yup, Sure wish we would have done the same thing. She is doing to her doctor today to have x-rays done again. I know it will not matter with this process but atleast if this x-ray comes out clear it will give her a piece of mind.

Does anyone know how long it takes St. Lukes to rescheldule the interview once she has been cleared?

If the sputum test takes 8 weeks and the test is negative, I would think, only a few days to forward the results to USEM!
