Hi all!!!!

Me and my fiancee are currently in the final processes of the K-1 visa [well, this side of the Atlantic anyway!!!] and I have my interview at the US Embassy in London in a weeks time. I am looking into flight options from the UK to USA, specifically Boston. I'm most likely going to travel via Dublin. Could anyone please tell me what this involves?

Does this mean the 'Brown envelope' will be opened and all other checks will be done in Ireland, during the stopover? From looking around on VJ, I was under the impression this does happen.

Also, I just wanna say a big big thank you to eveyone involved with VJ, it has been such an AWESOME resource in all parts of the K-1 process and without it, well...............I can't imagine what we'd have done without this wicked website. THANK YOU EVERYONE!!!!!

:-)

Most (not all) Irish US bound flights do US immigration in Dublin or Shannon; you can ask the airline when you book whether yours is one of them. If you go through US passport control in Ireland then yes, the immigration part (taking of brown envelope, finger prints etc) will be done there as well. It can be useful because there is rarely a wait.

If you're travelling from East Midlands to Dublin and then onto Boston that could be a significant advantage to you from the perspective of not having to travel to Heathrow; could save you a bit of cash and time, plus you'll have a relaxing flight knowing that you're well on your way!

If you're planning to travel to Heathrow anyway, I wouldn't bother stopping off at Dublin or Shannon to use it as your POE.

If you fly Heathrow-Dublin/Shannon-Boston the travel time is around 10-12 hours vs 7 hours Heathrow/Boston direct. There would have to be a very long queue at Boston for stopping off in Ireland for there to be any advantage. On the 15 flights that I've had to Boston in 2008 and 2009, the time from landing to exiting the airport has never been longer than 45 minutes, my K1 entry was one of the quickest at just 30 minutes.

With regards to using the POEs in Ireland, I've had no experience, I'm sure there are others who will give you the lowdown.

Good luck with the rest of the journey!

Dom
