It's the eve of December, which means that we can safely get away with choosing our "top five" lists without being TOO nerdy. So for those of you who still buy CDs or download entire albums (legally!), what are your five favorite releases of 2009? For you movie fans, what are your five faves of the year? I'll consider movies that were released on DVD in 2009 to count, even if they hit theatres in 2008... How about top five books?

I'll start!

Wyatt's Torch's top five albums of 2009

1.) Metric - Fantasies

2.) Zu - Carboniferous

3.) A. C. Newman - Get Guilty

4.) Steven Wilson - Insurgentes

5.) Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz

It was a pretty good year for music, in my opinion. I bought a lot of new CDs this year...some were quite disappointing (Muse, ...Trail of Dead, Porcupine Tree), but others were great surprises, especially the Zu album. I never thought I'd love an avant garde instrumental thrash metal album...

Wyatt's Torch's top five movies of 2009

1.) Star Trek

2.) Vicky Cristina Barcelona

3.) The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button

4.) The Wrestler

5.) Doubt

I'm no Trekkie, but I absolutely loved that movie. It wasn't a great year for movies, in my opinion, which is largely why I included 2008 releases that were put out on DVD in 2009. I often agree with the Academy when it comes to "best picture" candidates, which kinda scares me a little.

So...how about the rest of you?

Yeah! I own about 850 CDs by about 300 different artists, and I'm tempted to say Metric is my favorite band right now. Them, the New Pornographers, TV On The Radio, Muse and Porcupine Tree would be duking it out for that honor. Just to...you know...throw in another top five.

Nah, not at all. I mean, the movie is NOT without its failings...don't get me wrong. But the thing is so damn stylish and entertaining from start to finish that I have to call it my favorite of the year. I saw it in theatres, then also on Thanksgiving...loved it equally much both times.

I'll give Wolverine an honorable mention. I didn't expect much, since it was criticized pretty harshly by most reviewers...but I was thoroughly entertained when I saw it on DVD. I basically like movies that are either deep and thought provoking, or highly entertaining. Wolverine fell firmly into the latter category for me!
