The poverty experienced by many Aborigines is as morally reprehensible as torture and must be eradicated, Amnesty International secretary-general Irene Khan says.

In Australia for a week-long visit, Ms Khan has also called on the Rudd government to end the discriminatory measures of the Northern Territory intervention into remote indigenous communities.

They were "stigmatising and disempowering an already marginalised people", she said.

...

The poverty she saw northeast of Alice Springs reminded her of a third world country, she said in a statement.

"That indigenous peoples experience human rights violations on a continent of such privilege is not merely disheartening, it is morally outrageous," she said.

...

She was particularly scathing of the compulsory quarantining of welfare payments and suggested there was a "real risk" Labor could squander an opportunity to change direction.

poverty is poverty wherever it occurs, and we should all be outraged.

But for it to occur in a country as prosperous as Australia is double the outrage. It just speaks to how callous and medieval the Australian people really are.

Good point. They probably don't care because Aborigines aren't white.

Lets hope you don't read about the stolen generation.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

This finding is a bunch of BS anyway, considering the sheer amount of benefits Aboriginals receive. That is also on top of thousands a month many get in mining royalties. Actually this is one of those issues that verifies what I have said about not being able to assimilate a culture overnight. Sorry but you cannot get tribal people to assimilate into western culture overnight.

Things they already Receive:

  • Twice the welfare of everyone else. - And you know Aus welfare is generous as it is.
  • Half their land back for them to control
  • Free houses and cars
  • Absolutely free education with Free living expenses. They just need to apply.
  • Affirmative action for them to get jobs. Even if someone else is better qualified. They just need to apply.
  • $525,000 in damages for the stolen generation

What else would you like us to do? This researcher is probably some P--e style clown who has about as much common sense as a piece of #######.

This research is clearly looking at it solely based on their circumstances, therefore, assumes Aus is doing nothing to help them.

Hey genius, ever occurred to you that many chose to live that way?

Ever occurred to you that the situation is that way because successive Australian governments have marginalized the aborigines.

he has a knack for missing the obvious

Unlike your "knack" of assuming your opinions are correct and ignoring anyone else, in particularly any facts they post.

At least come out and say it dude. By default, you are right and everyone else is wrong. That way those of us with a clue don't waste any time trying to have a discussion with idiots.

Yes BY. I am right and you are wrong. Furthermore, not only are you wrong but you are big fat wrong.

Not my problem certain demographics don't get how to function in a western society. No one else seems to have an issue.

1. Obey the law and respect others.

2. Get a job, go to school, or start a business.

3. Work.

4. Raise a family.

5. Assist and help your community and others.

Not rocket science.
